How to Create Collections with Tags Tips For Beginner

In this article, we are going to focus on how to use tags to create product collections with Tags. We will detail it with an example and we will explain how they are the most practical form of classification for this purpose.

In this article, we saw what they are and how to add product tags. There we commented that they are a very powerful Shopify tool. If we know how to handle them well, they will become one of the basic tools to manage our products, both for the buyer and for ourselves in managing our inventory and our offer.

How to Create Collections with Tags Tips For Beginner

1- Using the tags as a classification added to each product

Each Shopify product listing has several fields that can be used to classify products. We refer to the most obvious ones as Price, Product Type, or Vendor, but also others like Product title, Inventory stock, or Variant’s title.

But while Price, Product Type, Vendor, Product title, Inventory stock, etc., are unique fields, that is, there is only one data of this type for each product, next to these fields are also Tags. The tags can be as many as we want (within an order) and this gives them much more possibilities.

Going back to the example we used in the article on tags, we see how the different products in the Zaska Beer store can have several characteristics in common.

We start from this list of nine products:

There are a single vendor, Zaska Beer, and three types of product, Beer, Packs, and Others. Although all the products are ultimately beer, the types of products that we have created give us a very logical classification when it comes to proposing our offer.

But let’s say that we also want to classify this catalog with respect to other characteristics. For example bottle size, small or large.

Small: 20 cl and 25 cl

Large: 33 Cl and 50 cl

Among the products associated with the small size we have:

Ziska – 20cl

Ziska – 25cl

Pack Zaskas 25cl

Among the products associated with the large size are:

Ziska – 33cl

Ziska – 50cl

Pack Zaskas 33cl

Pack Zaskas 50cl

Therefore, we go to Shopify Admin -> Products -> All Products and tag the products like this (as explained here):

Use meaningful tags. You can use abbreviations but they will be more difficult to understand, especially if there are multiple team members, and their SEO value will be lost.

2- Create collections using tags

Now that we have the products tagged we can go to the collections section Shopify Admin -> Products -> Collections.

For the Zaska Beer store, we already have several collections created according to the Product Type. Click on Create Collection.

We are going to create a Large Format collection.

Go down to the Conditions section. We mark ‘Automatically select products based on conditions’ and ‘Products must match: all conditions’ (although for this example it does not influence). In the first selector, we choose ‘Product tag’.

In the next selector, we can only choose now, ‘is equal to’, that is, it is an exact match. Therefore, in the next field, we see a selector with the most frequently used tags. As we indicated in the first article on tags, a variation in capital letters
